As we were learning about different coloring techniques in my creative faith community, many members requested a beginner-friendly tutorial on how to color a Bible verse coloring page in Procreate. So I created one… and decided to post it on YouTube so it is accessible to everyone.

Would you like to use your iPad and Apple Pencil for more than creating pretty pictures?

Digital Scripture coloring can give you a peaceful, creative way to slow down, focus on God’s Word, and notice truths you might otherwise hurry past. And because you are coloring digitally, you can experiment freely with colors, textures, and techniques—without worrying about ruining your coloring page.

In my new beginner-friendly video tutorial, I show you step by step how to color a Bible verse coloring page in Procreate.

We will color a page inspired by Genesis 1:31:

“God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.”

The page is filled with reminders of God’s creativity—from the sun, stars, mountains, and trees to the ocean, fish, flowers, animals, and people. As you add color to each part of the design, you can pause to notice and thank God for the beauty, goodness, and variety of all He created.

What You Will Learn in This Beginner Procreate Tutorial

You do not need to be an experienced digital artist to follow along. I explain the process with beginners in mind and show you how to:

  • Import a Bible verse coloring page into Procreate
  • Set up your layers so the black outlines remain visible
  • Add color without covering the original line art
  • Choose and adjust colors as you work
  • Add texture, shading, and creative details with Procreate brushes
  • Correct mistakes and experiment without fear
  • Avoid some of the common frustrations beginners experience

By the end of the tutorial, you will understand a simple process that you can use with many other Scripture coloring pages—not only the Genesis 1:31 design featured in the video.

Why Color Scripture Digitally?

Digital coloring is convenient, portable, and forgiving. You can carry your iPad almost anywhere, try an unexpected color combination, undo a mistake, or begin again without printing another page.

But for me, the greatest benefit is not simply convenience.

Coloring Scripture art can help us give God’s Word our time and attention.

When our hands are busy with a quiet, repetitive activity, our minds often have room to linger. We may notice a word in the verse, remember something God has done, or feel prompted to pray about a situation in our lives. The coloring itself is not the goal; it is a tool that can help us slow down and become more attentive.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is delighting in the Word, connecting with Jesus, and hiding God’s Word in your heart.

Turn Coloring Time into Time with God

You can treat this tutorial as an art lesson, but I hope you will also let it become a time of creative Scripture meditation.

Before you begin, read Genesis 1:31 slowly. Then consider one or two of these prompts while you color:

  • What part of God’s creation brings me the most delight?
  • What does creation reveal to me about God’s character?
  • Where do I need to pause and notice God’s goodness today?
  • How has God expressed His creativity through me?
  • What can I thank Him for as I color this page?

You might keep a notebook nearby or add a separate layer in Procreate where you can jot down words, prayers, or insights that come to mind.

You can also turn the verse into a short prayer:

Father God, thank You for the beauty, goodness, and variety of everything You created. Help me slow down and notice Your handiwork today. Thank You for creating me in Your image and inviting me to create with You. Amen.

Simple Tips for a More Peaceful Coloring Experience

1. Choose a small color palette first

Selecting a few coordinating colors before you begin can make the page feel more cohesive and reduce decision fatigue. You can always add more colors later.

2. Begin with the easiest areas

Start with a few larger shapes while you get comfortable with the tools. Save the tiny details for later.

3. Use separate layers

Layers allow you to experiment with shading, texture, and color changes without permanently altering other parts of your design.

4. Take your time

This is not a race or another task to complete. Pause, breathe, pray, and enjoy the process.

5. Let go of perfection

Your finished page does not have to look like mine—or anyone else’s. Creativity becomes much more delightful when we stop trying to prove ourselves and give ourselves permission to explore.

What If I Am Brand New to Procreate?

That is exactly who this tutorial is for.

Procreate can feel overwhelming when you first open it because there are so many brushes, menus, gestures, and possibilities. You do not need to learn everything at once. This project gives you a specific, meaningful reason to practice a few essential skills. Once you understand how to import the page, arrange your layers, and add color beneath the outlines, you will have a foundation you can build on.

And remember: the undo gesture is always there. Digital coloring is a wonderful place to experiment because very little is permanent.
